I have a confession… I heart soda extremely. I know, I know- the sugar! The caffeine! The aspartame! The acidity! Soda is terrible for us for so many reasons but it’s so frickin’ tasty, it has been a hard thing for me to give up.
Initially, I didn’t want all the sugar, or worse, the high fructose corn syrup so I would turn to diet soda which is calorically easier but the aspartame and other artifical sweetners are just too toxic to ingest with a clear conscious. What is a girl to do!?
I recently discovered the magical soda that is Zevia. Zevia is a natural soda that is sweetened with Stevia, which is a natural, safe and calorie-free herb. The best part? It tastes really good, not chemical-y and weird. It comes in a bunch of different flavors like cola, black cherry and orange. Cola is the only flavor that has some caffeine, an equivalent amount to can of regular diet soda. The only downside is that it is a bit pricey at $5.99 for a 6 pack. Although I have found it for $3.99 at my local co-op.
So, while I am an advocate of minimizing processed foods as much as possible and keeping your blood in a healthy alkaline-acid range, I realize that we all want to enjoy life and sometimes we just have to indulge. And hey, as long as it’s in moderation, why the heck not?
